© WE NEED ANOTHER ‘IRONSIDES’!

 

Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell given to the House of Commons, 20 April 1653 “It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money. Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter’d your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth? Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors. In the name of God, go!”

Spoken a little over three hundred and sixty years ago this “short speech”, delivered to Parliament by Oliver Cromwell, would have an unerring truth if delivered today.

The self-serving career politicians of today would have been held in as much contempt by Cromwell as were his peers in 1653.

The first paragraph could have been written for New Labour as it describes their thirteen years of shenanigans between 1997 and 2010 perfectly. Also it seems that bribery was as rife then as it is now. Is it something to do with the water in that part of the Capital?

The Coalition cannot be left out of this script. The last paragraph encapsulates their collective desire to ignore the will of the Electorate and do whatever they please as long as it fills their corrupt pockets.

With scant regard for the Law of the Land or the well-being of the people, the politicians of today have done whatever they want, taken whatever they want and, in the process, nearly bankrupt the country. Please don’t be fooled into thinking that the Coalition has your best interests at heart, they haven’t! They are as self-serving as the miserable rabble that they replaced. Without the LibDems acting as a concrete slipper and hampering his ludicrous EU inspired

policies, Cameron would have decimated the NHS, put spies in everyones PC, reduced the Armed Forces to some sort of TA Home Guard and changed the Electoral boundaries in order to ensure guaranteed future Tory Governments.

What of the LibDems? What indeed! After years in the wilderness they now resemble a pack of power hungry lampreys ever eager to latch on to any Party that will give them undeserved kudos and a place at the top table. Stalking the corridors of Westminster they greet Ministerial colleagues and their Opposition counterparts with equal zeal. They are about as trustworthy as a rattlesnake with a hangover.

One can only hope that the media, in general, will wake up to this gathering of egoistic self-servers and be brave enough to broadcast their collective distaste for the whole assembly.

Maybe then the people will awake from the politically induced torpor to which they have been subjected to and demand real change.

As Cromwell said,

“So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!”

Only by showing the present incumbents and their weak opposition the door will we be able to secure a bright and healthy future for our children and their children’s children.
